A Note on Religion

religion and Darkness

the sacred grove

Let me take a moment to talk about religion (before I royally piss someone off).

Some of the time I try to use phrases like “I believe,” “I feel,” “I think,” “in my opinion,” but sometimes statements like that just don’t have enough punch for meaningful writing. So please pardon me when I slip into telling you how things ARE instead of how I see them. In truth, we each have our own perception, especially of non-physical things like God and Love and Truth and Life and what all those things and similar are about.

I am not trying to start a new religion. I am not trying to destroy anyone’s faith in their current religion, nor on the same note, advocating any particular faith. I am merely exploring ideas that I am drawn to and feel called to share with others.

Darkness is not about religion, except perhaps that it is a shadow of it. When a parent tells a small child “Don’t do that.” the child will ask “Why?” I think it’s when we stop asking why that Darkness begins to come into play in our lives. Somewhere we learn there are things you’re not supposed to ask about, but there is always a part of us that wonders what the answers are. Some may forget about it, push it to the subconscious, but others are almost driven mad by the need to know what their parents basically could not tell them because they didn’t know why. Some religions claim to have all the answers, but remember that humans are flawed. We make mistakes, we misinterpret the messages we’re given. Following the feeling of Darkness into a deeper exploration of your beliefs doesn’t mean you have no faith. Finding the Truth for yourself, instead of blindly believing what you’ve been told, will actually make your faith stronger, no matter what religion you have faith in.

Please if I make a statement you disagree with or don’t understand, just email me, politely, if you will. I love discussing this stuff, provided that it’s a discussion and not an argument. Oftentimes people of different beliefs are just haggling over differences in the language used, different meanings of the same words. If you don’t get my meaning, ask me and I’ll clarify as best I can.

I am a writer/illustrator of various types of speculative fiction but mostly modern fantasy. I have loved magic, and the people and creatures who live with it and use it, all my life, and writing and drawing these people in modern environments makes it all the more real to me. I also like to add an element of Darkness and horror, as well as science fiction, for “flavor”. I am fascinated with everything from unicorns and dragons to vampires and demons.

  1. Kester says:

Regarding darkness and religion, Orthodox Christians have a kind of theology they call “apophatic”. In Latin it would be called “Via Negativa”. Darkness is central to it in the sense that (although they are Christians), they believe we can’t “know” God, and never will. Rather than saying, “God is good” they say “God is not good” because our understanding of good is so warped that any attempt to attribute our flawed understanding to God is, basically, a lie.

This has a pretty good explanation of it:

Patreon is a service to provide funding for creators of all kinds. Donations for my blogs and creations are (currently) a per-project basis. Be sure to browse and find your favorite creators so you can not only send recurring funds, but keep in touch and get exclusive insights and incentives.

Why, you may ask, am I asking for donations? Please consider that I spend hours wording my posts and creating original artwork to enhance their meaning. If you’ve enjoyed and hopefully felt enlightened (or endarkened?) by what you’ve read, and if you’d like to see more articles, I would truly appreciate your funds and your energy. Also, I would like to produce some books in the future, both of these kinds of articles and fiction stories, and your funding would help this immensely.
